How to ask a client for their password

1 min read · Updated

Short answer

Ask the client to paste the login into temp.cool and send you the link, instead of typing it into an email. Send them a short message with the steps, and save the login in your password manager as soon as you open it.

  1. 1

    Send the client the steps

Copy the message below into your email or chat. It takes the client a minute.

  2. 2

    Open the link once

When their link arrives, open it and save the login straight into your password manager.

  3. 3

    Return it the same way

If you change the password, send the new one back in a one-time link too.

A message you can copy

Could you send me the login for [system]? Please don’t put it in an email. Go to temp.cool, paste the username and password, set it to open once, and send me the link that appears. It deletes itself after I open it.

Why it matters

Logins in email threads pile up. One project brings a CMS password, the next a hosting login, a year later a payment provider key. If your mailbox or the client’s is ever compromised, all of it leaks at once. A one-time link keeps the login out of both inboxes.

Make it easy for the client

  • Link to this guide or to sending a password securely so they can see it is a normal thing to do.
  • Ask for a separate login if the system allows it. Your own user account can be removed when the job ends, without the client changing their password.
  • Agree on a password by phone for very sensitive logins, and ask the client to put it on the link.
