How to send a password securely

1 min read · Updated

Short answer

Don't paste it into email or chat, where it stays forever. Put it in a temp.cool link set to open once, send the link, and share any extra password for the link by phone or text.

  1. 1

    Paste the password into temp.cool

Add a short note if it helps, like which account it's for.

  2. 2

    Set it to open once

Pick a short timer too, like 1 day. The sooner it's gone, the better.

  3. 3

Send the link, not the password

Email or chat is fine for the link. If you added a password to the link itself, share that one by phone or text.

Why not just email it?

Email and chat keep everything. A password you send today still sits in the sent folder, the recipient’s inbox, backups, and every device that syncs them. If any of those is ever breached, the password leaks with it, often years later.

A temp.cool link holds the password only until it is read. After that the link shows “this secret is gone”, and there’s nothing left to leak.

Tips

  • Change temporary passwords after first use. If you’re setting up an account for someone, make them pick their own password when they log in.
  • Use a short timer. One hour or one day is usually enough. Unread secrets disappear on their own.
  • Check it arrived. Your private manage link shows whether the message was opened. If it says “opened” and the recipient says they never saw it, change the password.
  • Two channels for extra safety. Add a password to the link and tell it by phone. Then someone who intercepts the link still can’t open it.

What the recipient sees

They get a page saying someone sent them a secret, with a “Show the secret” button. Link previews in WhatsApp, Slack or email can’t open it, only a tap can. After reading, they can copy it with one tap.
